Once the decision had been made, there was no turning back, and a wall rising 587 feet from the Colorado Riverbed was erected with almost 10 million tons of mixed concrete and 7 years of herculean effort. Water began to back up behind the dam in 1963, reaching its "full pool" in 1980.
